Pick of the Week: Abbazia di Novacella Kerner – 2021

If you are anything like my family, and enjoy celebrating your Italian heritage, you likely are greatly awaiting the Feast of the Seven Fishes, an Italian Christmas Eve tradition. While you may have selected your menu, you may be struggling to find the perfect white wine to pair with your meal. Perhaps you don’t want to go the obvious route of Pinot Grigio, but you want to choose an Italian white wine that will work well with fish. Well, look no further than Kerner.

Kerner originates from the mountainous Abbazia di Novacella in Alto Adige. Once owned and ruled by Austria, this area has a strong German influence. Kerner is a cross between Schiava and Riesling, and is named for the German poet Julius Kerner. This bottle has a pale yellow color that leans toward green. It is bright and acidic on the palate, with notes of grapefruit, peach, apricot, fresh herbs, and an earthy minerality. The finish is long and dry. Enjoy a glass for $14, or indulge in a bottle for $48.

Buon Natale!
